Alan Lowndes Painter

Alan-Lowndes-Painter

Alan Lowndes Painter was a formative exponent of Northern industrial depictions in oils. Using a bright palette he was able to bring an evocative style to his paintings, perfectly capturing the industrial skyline that dominated the early to mid 20th century. Born in Heaton Norris, a suburb of Stockport, in 1921, he was largely self-taught, though he did study painting after the war at night school.

As a painter, Alan Lowndes has seen his following and reputation grow – he passed away in 1978-in recent times, being regularly compared to that other celebrated Northern artist of a generation: L.S. Lowry. Though not as prolific or as famous as the aforementioned Lowry, his work is no less important, acquiring a demand in collectors circles with high prices being paid at auction.

His portrayal of street scenes and Northerners going about their daily business; work or pleasure, truly catapulted Alan Lowndes Painter into the higher echelons of famed Northern artists. In addition, Cornwall influenced a great number of his works-spending time in the area- capturing the Cornish people and dramatic seascapes with such entirety that they are equally sought after as his Northern scenes.
