Northern-School-Artists

Northern School Artists are a collection of prominent British artists whose collective inspiration is the celebrated 20th century northern artist L.S. Lowry. Featuring both established and up and coming northern artists, the northern school of artists have characterised industrial scenes featuring chimneys, factories and every day nostalgic scenes that encompass the northern way of life.

Cataloguing everyday life from the early 20th century to date, the industrial and landscapes of the area are depicted in paintings and sketches by various artists. As a collective, ‘the school’ comprises notable exponents of the genre, including: Theodore Major, Alan Lowndes, William Turner and Harold Riley with young artists such as Liam Spencer and Ben Kelly continuing L.S. Lowry’s legacy with their contemporary take on the northern scene.

L.S. Lowry is the most important of the Northern school artists, the record price of  c£5.6 million for one of his paintings at auction has helped to trigger a popularity for northern art amongst art aficionados and those looking for a sound investment. With its nostalgic appeal for a bygone era, northern art regularly benefits from exposure through exhibitions, galleries and private collections
